Syracuse, NY - The Pioneer FFA was recognized by the New York State Agricultural Society at its 186th annual meeting on January 4, 2018 in Syracuse, New York.  President, Katie O’Hare and Vice President, Katharina Heitzman, accepted the prestigious honor of New York State FFA Chapter of the Year for its accomplishments over the past year.  The officers were accompanied by their FFA advisors, Mrs. Mary-Lou Genaway and Mr. Jon Clayson.

The New York State Agricultural Society was organized in 1832 to foster, promote and improve New York State’s food and agriculture industry.  The Society’s mission is to improve the condition of agriculture through education, leadership development and recognition programs, such as the Chapter of the Year award.

The chapter was honored with the National Superior Chapter award at the 90th Annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN.  To receive this award, members completed several local, state, and national activities in the areas of Growing Leaders, Building Communities, and Strengthening Agriculture.  Each activity was documented, and members completed a lengthy application outlining their successes.  Representing New York, the chapter also took part in five career development events, including Extemporaneous Speaking, Parliamentary Procedure, Chapter Meeting, Agricultural Sales, and Meats Evaluation.  Nine members received their FFA American Degrees.

Additional highlights of the year include sponsoring a weekly farmers’ market in the fall, hosting a “Farmer for a Day” program for elementary students, attending leadership camp and providing officer training, raising six turkeys and providing Thanksgiving dinners for deserving families, filling 50 Christmas boxes for children around the world a part of Operation Christmas Child, and developing an agricultural literacy program for second graders within the school district.

Approximately 100 Pioneer FFA members participate in various activities throughout the year, from leadership development to career skill preparation.  Congratulations to the chapter on a successful year!
